She Refused to Leave When the Sea Came for Her House, And the Ocean Told Her Everything

TATANKA's newest release is a meditation on what it means to listen until there is nothing left but the listening.

There is a kind of courage that doesn't look like courage from the outside.

It looks like an old woman staying in a house everyone else has left. It looks like notebooks full of symbols no one else can read. It looks like pressing record one more time as the water comes through the door.

TATANKA's latest release, The Last Transcription, is the story of Mara Swiftwind, a fictional Indigenous composer who spends the last winter of her life alone on a flooding cliff, recording an ocean she believes is composing something no human has ever been able to notate.

It is also a meditation on what AI and human creativity can do when they stop trying to impress each other and simply listen together.

This album was built iteratively, human narrative, AI generation, human curation, AI refinement, using Google Flow Music, Claude.ai, ChatGPT, Audacity 4, and Linux. The tools are open. The process is transparent. The result is something neither human nor AI could have made alone.

That is, in the end, what TATANKA has always been about.

Not AI replacing human creativity. Not human creativity reluctantly tolerating AI. But two kinds of intelligence, sitting together at the edge of something vast, both pressing record, both listening for what neither can quite name alone.

The Last Transcription is available now, free to stream and download at TATANKA.site.

The ocean is still composing. We are still transcribing.

Come listen.
