Healing and art: Exene Cervenka: “Something really bad is a blessing and a curse”

An article on the artist notes: “ Exene Cervenka has transitioned successfully through a variety of career phases, starting with her stint in X, the band that perhaps best embodied the character of L.A.’s punk subculture of the early ’80s. “She moved on to the rootsy folk-country side project the Knitters with other members of X and the Blasters, then launched a solo career that included spoken-word performances of her own writings. “In the last decade, she started taking her interest in visual art seriously to the point of regularly exhibiting in galleries around the country. “A recent diagnosis of multiple sclerosis has done little to slow her creative output, but it is one factor that has figured into her return to Southern California after four years spent living in rural Missouri….” “The sudden loss of her friend [fiddle player and singer Amy Farris], with whom she had begun writing songs, comes at a time when Cervenka has been dealing with upheaval of her own in the MS diagnosis

Music Review: What Do We Do Now - J Mascis

Image
(Sub Pop) After nearly four decades of writing music, J Mascis does run the risk of being misunderstood for repeating himself. And to an extent, it’s not entirely wrong: Dinosaur Jr. seems to have peaked during their second act. But What Do We Do Now , his first solo album in six years, rolls out with a few new surprises. Centered around mostly acoustic ballads, tracks like Can’t Believe We’re Here and I Can’t Find You highlight the revered shredder’s bittersweet ruminations with additional piano arrangements. His typically droll vocal delivery ends up soaring with more emotional coloring, likely due to him stripping away some of his virtuoso guitar playing. And yes, Mascis does aim for a blown-out outro or two whenever the song allows ( It’s True ). It’s not quite at the level of Without a Sound , Mascis’ definitive pop moment, but What Do We Do Now is the closest he’s been to showing his more tender side in years. 25 February, 2024 – 23:50 — Juan Edgardo Rodriguez source

Challenging the dominant narratives: faculty members’ perceptions of administrators’ responses to Critical Race Theory bans

Legislators continue to label Critical Race Theory (CRT) and other race-based concepts as divisive. Nevertheless, CRT, at its core, is committed to radical transformation and addressing issues of race and racism to understand how People of Color are oppressed. Through rhetoric and legislative bans, this current anti-CRT movement uses race-neutral policies and practices to limit and eliminate CRT scholars, especially faculty members, from teaching and researching critical pedagogies and other race-based topics. source

Learn How to Deal With Energy Vampires

Image
This photo is Winona Ryder and Gary Oldman in the movie Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992). Aside from the appeal and dramatic mythology of those kinds of vampires, psychiatrist  Judith Orloff  explains the real-life variety: “ Energy vampires are people who suck our energy dry. Everyone can benefit from skills on how to cope with them.” She adds, “You can especially benefit if you are an ‘ intuitive empath ’ who absorbs the pain and negativity of others into your body, and become exhausted by it. “Our relationships are governed by a give and take of energy. Some people make us more electric or at ease. Yet others suck the life right out of us.” In her article Protect Yourself from Energy Vampires , Dr. Orloff details a number of examples of these ‘vampires’ that can deeply impact people, especially those of us who are highly sensitive – and what to do about them to protect yourself. We need more than ideas to be creative, we need passion and energy . Being productive in most creative ve

Sarah Menescal: (I Just) Died In Your Arms Tonight (Original by Cutting Crew)

She’s loving by proxy, no give and all take Sarah Menescal: (I Just) Died In Your Arms Tonight (Original by Cutting Crew) From Her Album “Café Bossa Nova” – Buy it here: https://music.apple.com/us/album/caf%C3%A9-bossa-nova/1581694460 Yet another brilliant, inventive Bossa Nova-infused rock adaptation. This time it’s personal! My son’s band plays their own version of this ’80s classic hit, but they are metal, so diametrically opposite. Again, any cover should be an interpretation, deconstructing and reconstructing the original, as Sarah did here. And if anyone has noticed a trend with covers I post, yes, I am currently networking with South American artists. Portuguese and Spanish are just two of the numerous languages TATANKA will use, teach each other, and write originals in, for the studio and stage. And with the Jazz elements of Bossa Nova, that genre lends itself perfectly to the musical diversity of TATANKA. Many more styles, countries, and languages to come… Plus, I finally had

Do You Feel A Calling to Be Creative?

Image
Why do many people choose careers in the arts, or work that actively engages their creativity? Given that everyone is creative to some degree, what leads, urges, even compels so many of us to be creatively expressive? Most of us will never be actors or other filmmakers – especially ones that are seen and acknowledged publicly – but many of those creators talk about what calls them to engage in creative work, despite the challenges. One example: Lupita Nyong’o , who won an Academy Award for best supporting actress on March 2, 2014 for her role in “12 Years a Slave.” In her moving acceptance speech, she noted one source of inspiration for her portrayal of a slave: “It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s. And so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance.” She also thanked director Steve McQueen: “You charge everything you fashion with a breath of your own spirit. Thank you so much for putting me in this posi

Inequality beneath the surface: a Belgian case study on structural discrimination in the workplace and the role of organizational structure, culture and policies

The context of a long-standing research tradition, discrimination has emerged as a critical factor contributing to inequalities within the labor market. While existing studies have primarily focused on overt discrimination during the recruitment and selection process, influenced by biases, attitudes, or stereotypes, there remains a significant knowledge gap regarding discrimination within the workplace and its underlying structural dimensions. This article aims to address this gap by examining the impact of organizational culture, structure and policies on workplace discrimination, with a particular emphasis on women and ethnic minorities. source Structural discrimination in the workplace can manifest in various forms, such as unequal access to opportunities, biased decision-making processes, and limited career progression for marginalized individuals. For instance, women and minority groups may face glass ceilings that hinder their advancement, despite having the necessary qualificati
