An insightful and practical argument by Singer/Songwriter, Guitarist, Gear-head, Video Maker, Documentarian, and 21st Century Musician, Mary Spender

First things first. Mary is not just insightful. She’s a Rock Goddess. For example:

More evidence of her majesty:

Need more proof? She writes. Well. And is a multi-instrumentalist. And she’s cheeky, as our cousins over the pond say.

I was born in Evanston, so I’m just going to leave this revealing gem here.

AND… she’s wise “beyond her years.” Pun intended.

Follow Mary, or else.

You want MORE Mary? OK. You asked for this! I mean, not literally. I inferred that. Educated guess. I know. STFU, JJ.

OK, roll the tape.

See what I did there? That’s why I get paid the big bucks.

For another Gen AI project of mine, as I AI-enhanced a song that I had ridiculously sampled years ago from an analog cassette recording of the original digital WAV (ahem), it made me sentimental for days long gone by. In fact, I have about 500 good reasons to get misty-eyed.

My dad built this beast of a case for me in 1990 when he finally tired of seeing stack after stack of cassettes deposited randomly and literally everywhere around the house.

35 years later, they lie in wait…

As expected, my 17 year-old son has
alluded to having a go at them.

Yesss…

500+ by the way, but who’s counting?

And yes, atop is an actual 8-track.
Chicago’s very own
Off Broadway, circa 1979.
The Windy City sure knew how to ROCK,
once upon a time…

but I digress, per usual.

“Back in the day,” we had these glorious machines called 4-Tracks. Much like the rationale behind the 8-track, one could record four tracks, independently, then either mix them down, aka “Ping Pong” to afford “new” tracks, or mix down all to a stereo output into, what else, a standard stereo cassette recorder and as Mary points out in her treatise, et voila, DIY! But one major con was that as a result, a standard 90-minute tape, which offers 45 minutes of two stereo tracks, now was 22.5 minutes of four tracks in duration, meaning maybe five songs on a good day.

Do the math.

School is hard.

Yep, that’s me on the right, with SP⦿T.
This is how we rolled. Getting said cassette demos into the hands of the right people was an entirely different story, but at least we could avoid co$tly studio time.

If you want to hear the demo (I am on bass and vocals), click here. Yeah. We thought we were a more Pop flavor of Rush and boy, were we wrong and NOT in demand, anywhere! But I digress, yet again.

In an era dominated by digital streaming and instant downloads, the thought of cassette tapes might conjure memories of tangled ribbons and bulky Walkmen.. wait.. Walkmans? I dunno. Yet, against all odds, these nostalgic audio relics are making a surprising comeback, whispering secrets of the past while shaping the sounds of tomorrow. Imagine a world where the charm and warmth of analog (and may I add the unavoidable profanity that followed the fact that you did not clean your tape heads or bother to make sure the tape was taught before playing the cassette) meet the innovative spirits of today’s artists—a world where the hiss and crackle of a tape become creative tools rather than mere artifacts of a bygone era. Welcome to the possible renaissance of cassette tapes.

1983. First guitar. Certainly no Gibson. About 1″ string height over the 18th fret. Hair style? “Feathered.” I have no shame whatsoever.

As vinyl experienced its resurgence, and now cassettes are following suit, it’s evident that music lovers are craving connection to something more tactile, intimate, and authentic. My money rides on 8-Tracks v2.0 but that’s another rant. However, this cassette revival isn’t just about revisiting the past; it’s about crafting the future. Independent artists and major labels alike are rediscovering the unique qualities of cassette tapes, exploring how these humble magnetic strips can offer new avenues for musical expression. So I will once again drag you, kicking and screaming, into the unexpected journey of cassette tapes from being a mere nostalgic novelty to its potential to be a resurgent key player in the evolving music landscape, proving that sometimes, looking back is the best way to move forward. See what I did there? And Dad said my English degree was worthless.

The Resurgence of Analog: Cassette Tapes in the Digital Age

In today’s fast-paced digital age, it may come as a surprise to many that cassette tapes, a format once thought to be obsolete, are experiencing a resurgence in popularity. While the convenience and accessibility of digital music formats such as streaming services and MP3 downloads are undeniable, some music enthusiasts are rediscovering the nostalgia and pleasing aesthetics of listening to music, dare I say an “album,” on cassette tapes.

One of the key factors driving the resurgence of cassette tapes is the unique appeal of physical media in an increasingly digital world. As music consumption has shifted towards streaming services and digital downloads, many music listeners miss the tangible experience of holding a physical copy of their favorite album in their hands. The act of inserting a cassette tape into a player and pressing PLAY can bring a sense of nostalgia and connection to the music that is often lacking in the digital realm.

Another reason for the resurgence of cassette tapes is the retro appeal of the format. In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in vintage technology and analog aesthetics, with many young consumers embracing vinyl records, Polaroid cameras, and other analog formats. Cassette tapes, with their distinctive sound and physical charm, have become a sought-after collectible for music fans looking to add a touch of nostalgia to their music collections.

Furthermore, cassette tapes offer a unique listening experience that differs from digital formats. The warm, analog sound of a cassette tape can add depth and richness to the music, providing a more immersive listening experience than the often sterile sound of digital music files. Additionally, cassette tapes encourage listeners to engage with an album in its entirety, as the format requires manually flipping the tape over to hear the second side. This can lead to a more focused and intentional listening experience, as opposed to the shuffle feature often used with digital music.

Additionally, cassette tapes offer a low-cost and DIY approach to music distribution for independent artists and labels. Unlike vinyl records, which can be expensive to produce and require specialized equipment for playback, cassette tapes are relatively inexpensive to manufacture and can be played on a wide range of consumer-grade tape players. This makes cassette tapes an accessible and affordable format for up-and-coming musicians looking to release their music in a physical format.

Moreover, cassette tapes have a DIY ethos that appeals to many music fans. The format allows for creative experimentation, such as homemade mixtapes and DIY tape labels, that can add a personal touch to the listening experience. Many cassette tape enthusiasts also appreciate the physicality of the format, from the tangible feel of the tape in their hands to the unique artwork and packaging that often accompanies cassette releases.

In addition, cassette tapes have become a popular format for music labels and artists to release limited-edition and special-edition releases. Collectors and music fans alike are drawn to the exclusivity and uniqueness of cassette releases, which often feature limited pressings, special packaging, and bonus tracks not available in other formats. This has resulted in a thriving cassette tape market, with collectors and enthusiasts eagerly seeking out rare and unique cassette releases from their favorite artists.

The resurgence of cassette tapes in the digital age can be seen as a testament to the enduring appeal of analog formats and the desire for a more tactile and tangible connection to music. Despite the convenience and accessibility of digital music formats, cassette tapes offer a unique listening experience that resonates with music enthusiasts seeking a more immersive and intentional way to experience music. Whether for their retro appeal, DIY ethos, or cultural significance, cassette tapes have carved out a niche in the modern music landscape and continue to captivate a new generation.
