Having it all: What is real success?

Image
Rebecca Romijn said of her character in her tv series “Pepper Dennis” (2006) that she “gets in her own way. “She thinks you can’t have it all and, of course, everyone’s version of ‘all’ varies. But I think there’s a way to do it with grace and joy. “People think that if you have it all, it’s just by the skin of your teeth and you’ll always feel like you’re at the end of your rope. “I think there are days when you feel like that, but… isn’t that part of the roller coaster ride?” Romijn adds that she is “very happy with what’s happened so far in my career. But there’s more that I want out of life.” [Los Angeles Times April 4, 2006.] Motherhood and career And then there’s the issue of motherhood. Writer Wendy Sachs was a TV producer before becoming a mother, and said in her stayatworkmoms blog post “ Resisting The Cult Of Mommyhood ” she wanted to return to a career, but “began fearing that I simply wasn’t good enough. “If I were good enough, I figured, I should be relishing motherhood, ...

Music Review: Wall of Eyes - The Smile

Image
Music Reviews (XL Recordings) Having shunned the possibility of a new Radiohead album any time soon, Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood continue to embrace a less stressful path with a second The Smile release. Keenly aware that they’d never be able to fully meet expectations with their main project, the duo, alongside drummer Tom Skinner, adopt a looser, more cinematic expression. Wall of Eyes makes it loud and clear that a proposition like The Smile is here to stay, laying to rest the idea that any other Radiohead member could ever replicate the identity they’re gradually forging. While Skinner’s contributions were more pummeling on their debut—and frankly, leaning in a more rock-driven bent—he shows his true versatility as a malleable performer. His measured, striding technique is too distinctive compared to Selway’s twitchy groove on Read the Room , adopting hints of Ethiopian jazz before the trio lets loose with a winding cod...

How We Can Heal Trauma Using Our Nervous System with Dr. Aimie Apigian

Image
“Did you know that physical and mental trauma causes a permanent change in your biology? “The nervous system is where trauma gets stored in the body.” Aimie Apigian , MD MS MPH continues: “Healing Is Never Accomplished ‘In The Story.’ “Although there is a place for story in your healing journey…The ANSWER to healing has always been in your nervous system.” ~~~ “You adapted to life experiences to survive but you are not your trauma.” Dr Apigian notes there is a significant difference between stress and trauma: “When you’re under a stress your body is high energy – trying to get your body through something. But it can start to shake, you can start to feel low on energy, you may be deficient in magnesium, you may be an under-methylator and have some high oxidative stress – there are so many different factors that can weigh in on when your body decides, Oof I’m too shaky, this is too much for me.” ~~~ Dr. Apigian comments about her programs: “The Foundational Journey is comprised of my ...

Music Review: Good Living is Coming For You - Sweeping Promises

Image
(Feel It Records) It’s a story told often: bands finding their identity using minimal resources, from recording in basements and bathrooms to using single microphone setups, intent on creating a sound out of necessity. Sweeping Promises follows a similar path with their homegrown lo-fi, which teeters between deliberate and spontaneous, packing a hook-filled mix of exuberant anthems that feel bigger than they are. Their recording aesthetic doesn’t even obscure what might initially seem like deficiencies; it’s not like they raise the fuzz either, and that grainier filter ends up resonating in a good, if slightly uncomfortable, way. Once the ears adapt to the environment they’ve created, the second album by the duo  Lira Mondel and Caufield Schnug emerges with tuneful pop smarts  that could’ve ignited any college rock scene in the early eighties. Commanded by Mondel’s malleable howl and Shnug’s dynamic guitar freakou...

How We Can Develop Healthier Self Esteem, Self-Acceptance and Confidence

Image
“While a quiet ego was positively related to having a higher self-esteem, it was also related to various indicators of self-transcendence, including prosocial attitudes and behaviors.” Scott Barry Kaufman “The absence of self-acceptance in my life brought me the darkest pain I’ve ever been in.” Elizabeth Gilbert “The research shows that healthy self-compassion increases our inner drive, our resilience, and our ability to excel.” Kristin Neff “I’ve been hearing a lot of HSPs be held back from the worry of judgment from others or being different or listening to others’ expectations of you, or even self-judgment and fear of failure.” Therapist Julie Bjelland “If you are a highly creative person…an injured self-esteem will show up in your journey over and over again.” Therapist Mihaela Ivan Holtz ~~~~ Do you have a healthy level of self-esteem and self confidence? Or not so much? Our self-concept, positive self-regard and simply confidence, are key influences on how fully we realize our ta...
